Dwayne knows from first-hand experience the importance of having someone to talk to. Looking back on his own journey, he wishes he had sought counselling sooner. As counselling would have made a big difference in the quality of his life. Dwayne is grateful that he did eventually get that opportunity. By working with a counsellor, he could live the life he wanted to live. Having experienced the value a counsellor can bring, he wanted to pay it forward.
Through his ability to make genuine and authentic connections based on his own real-life experience, Dwayne helps his clients. Dwayne knows what it feels like to sit and wait for a father and mother who never show up and the hopelessness and loneliness that comes with that waiting. Having moved through his own pain to find joy, he wants to help others do the same. Believing it is through a shared connection and shared understanding between two people that hope is found. As a counsellor, he provides that connection and understanding for people who are struggling like he once was.
Dwayne is a Registered Therapeutic Counselor (RTC) with the Association of Cooperative Counsellors and Therapists of Canada (ACCT). He is also working on becoming a Canadian Certified Addictions Counsellors (CCAC) with the Canadian Addiction Counselors Certification Federation. When not working in private practice, you can find Dwayne volunteering in the addictions community and building homes in Nicaragua and Dominican Republic. Or you can find him at home trying to grow giant pumpkins.
As a great example of the power of counselling, Dwayne loves to share about his dog Uno. Having grown up scared of dogs and not getting the point of the eating and pooping machines, he sought counselling to overcome his fears since dogs seemed to be everywhere. The counselling worked because Dwayne and Uno are a love match. Uno has brought unbelievable joy to Dwayne’s life, and Uno looks cool with his leather leash on. Which helps Dwayne look cool too.
