Anxiety counselling in Port Moody

At 220 Brew Street, or online anywhere in British Columbia.

Most people do not come in the first time anxiety shows up. They come when it has started deciding things: which invitations get declined, which conversations get avoided, how many hours of sleep are left.

Anxiety counselling is not a course in talking yourself out of it. Telling an anxious person their fear is irrational has never once worked, and your counsellor will not try. The work is to understand what your nervous system is responding to, and then build responses that hold up in the moment rather than an hour later when it is too late to be useful.

Sessions are 50 or 80 minutes at 220 Brew Street in Port Moody, or online anywhere in British Columbia. Come up to the third floor and check in at reception. Evenings Monday to Friday, and weekends Saturday and Sunday.

What anxiety looks like from the inside

It is not always the obvious version. Often it is the tiredness that sleep does not fix, the email you have reread six times before sending, the plan you cancelled and then felt relieved about and then felt worse about. Sometimes it arrives first in the body: a tight chest, a stomach that reacts before you have consciously worried about anything, a jaw that aches by mid-afternoon.

People come to us with panic attacks, health anxiety, social anxiety, performance and exam pressure, intrusive thoughts, worry that will not switch off at night, and anxiety that arrived alongside something else entirely - a bereavement, a diagnosis, a new baby, a job.

You do not need a diagnosis to book, and you do not need to be at your worst to deserve the appointment.

What the work involves

The first session is mostly you talking and your counsellor listening and asking. There is nothing to prepare. By the end of it you should have some sense of what the two of you would work on and roughly how.

After that it is practical. Noticing what sets it off and how early you can catch it. Learning what your body is doing and what actually settles it, which is rarely what the internet says. Testing the thoughts that feel like facts. Taking back, one at a time, the things anxiety has been deciding for you.

Some people need a handful of sessions about one specific thing. Others work at it longer, particularly where the anxiety sits on top of trauma. Your counsellor will be straight with you about which this looks like rather than booking you in indefinitely.

EMDR is available in Port Moody and online with Rebecca Helps, who has completed EMDR Basic Training and is a member of EMDR Canada. It is not the right fit for everyone and it is not the starting point for everyone.

It does not have to be severe

You do not need a diagnosis, a crisis, or a good enough reason. Plenty of people come while still functioning perfectly well on paper.

What you can expect from us

No promises about how long it takes: anyone who tells you anxiety clears in a fixed number of sessions is guessing. Your counsellor will give you an honest read after the first few and revise it out loud if they were wrong.

Registered, not self-declared: Rebecca Helps is a Master Therapeutic Counsellor registered with the Association of Cooperative Counselling Therapists of Canada, which requires supervised clinical hours, ongoing professional development and a published code of ethics. You are entitled to ask any counsellor what they are registered with, and to check it.

Confidential: what you say in the room stays in the room, within the limits the law places on every counsellor in British Columbia. Those limits are explained to you at the start, not buried.

A free first conversation: the 20-minute consultation costs nothing and carries no obligation to book anything afterwards. If you are not sure counselling is the right thing at all, that is a reasonable thing to use it for.
