Burnout rarely arrives all at once. It often starts with long weeks, a few short nights and the feeling that you’ll catch up “soon”. Over time, rest stops helping. You may feel tired even after a weekend, short with the people you care about, or detached from work that used to matter to you.

At Helps Counselling, our counsellors offer burnout counselling (sometimes called therapy for burnout) for adults who are feeling burnt out at work, at home or as caregivers. Sessions are available in person at our office in Suter Brook Village, Port Moody, close to Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam, or online anywhere in BC.

Signs you may be burnt out

Everyone’s experience is different, but people often describe:

  • Feeling exhausted most days, even after sleep or time off
  • Dreading work, or feeling numb or cynical about it
  • Trouble focusing, remembering things or making decisions
  • Headaches, tension, stomach upset or changes in sleep
  • Pulling away from friends, family or activities you used to enjoy
  • Feeling like nothing you do is enough

If some of these sound familiar, you’re not alone, and it’s okay to reach out before things feel “bad enough”.

Burnout at work, at home and in caregiving

Burnout isn’t only about long hours. It can come from caring for a parent or child with extra needs, from working in a helping role such as health care or teaching, or from carrying too much with too little support. Caregiver burnout and work burnout often happen together.

How counselling can help

Counselling gives you a space to slow down and look at what’s draining you. Together with your counsellor, you can:

  • Understand what’s contributing to your burnout
  • Notice early warning signs and when it may be time to pause
  • Set boundaries that fit your work and family life
  • Build practical skills for stress, sleep and rest
  • Reconnect with what matters to you

We don’t follow one fixed method. Depending on what you need, sessions may draw on approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Emotion Focused Therapy, somatic and trauma-informed work, and practical skills for everyday life. What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?
