Family counselling in Port Moody

At 220 Brew Street, or online anywhere in British Columbia.

Family counselling is one conversation with more than one person in it. Instead of each of you giving your account separately, everyone in the room hears the same thing at the same time, and a counsellor keeps it from turning into the argument you have already had a hundred times at home.

Families come for all sorts of reasons: a teenager who has stopped talking, a separation and how to tell the children, a parent's illness, a move, a death, a blended family finding its footing, or simply years of the same fight with no way out of it. You do not need a diagnosis or a crisis to come.

Sessions are 50 or 80 minutes at 220 Brew Street in Port Moody, or online anywhere in British Columbia. The room seats four comfortably. Evenings Monday to Friday and weekends Saturday and Sunday.

Who needs to be in the room

Not everyone, and not every time. Some families start with the parents alone, then bring the children in later. Some start with a parent and one child. A teenager who refuses to come is not the end of it: parents can be seen on their own and often that is where the useful work starts.

Your counsellor will suggest who should be there for each session and why, and you can disagree. Nobody is made to attend.

What actually changes

Not everyone agreeing. Families are not supposed to agree about everything, and counselling that aims for that usually fails. What changes is that the same disagreement stops costing so much: people say the real thing earlier, hear it without it becoming an attack, and stop rehearsing the argument for three days afterwards.

Some families come for four or five sessions about one specific thing. Others work at something for longer. Your counsellor will tell you honestly which of those this looks like, rather than booking you in indefinitely.

Parents can come alone

A teenager who will not come is not a dead end. A lot of useful work happens with the parents on their own.

Every shape of family

Blended, separated, single-parent, step-families, adult children and their parents, grandparents raising grandchildren.

In person or online

Useful when family members live in different towns, or when getting everyone to one room at one time is the hard part.

Before you book

Who to talk to first: if you are not sure whether family sessions or individual ones are the right start, the 20-minute consultation is free and exists to answer exactly that. It carries no obligation to book anything afterwards.

What to tell the children: the truth, in the fewest words that fit their age. Something like "we are going to talk to someone whose job is helping families talk to each other" is enough. Surprises tend to backfire.

Confidentiality with more than one person in the room: what is said in family sessions is confidential outside the room, within the limits the law places on every counsellor in British Columbia. Your counsellor will explain at the start how that works when children or teenagers are involved, and what is and is not shared with parents.

Family Counselling

Family dynamics can be complex, and when challenges arise, it can feel overwhelming to navigate them on your own. Whether you’re dealing with ongoing conflicts, communication breakdowns, or transitions that are affecting the family unit, family counselling offers a supportive environment to address these issues together.

Family counselling is designed to help families understand and improve their interactions with one another. It provides a safe space for each family member to express their thoughts and feelings, fostering better communication and understanding. Our experienced therapists work with you to identify the underlying issues that contribute to family tension, whether they stem from parenting challenges, sibling rivalry, blended family dynamics, or other stressors.

Through family counselling, you’ll learn to navigate conflicts more effectively, strengthen your relationships, and build a more cohesive, supportive family unit. Our approach is collaborative and inclusive, ensuring that everyone’s voice is heard and valued. We work together to develop strategies that promote healing, improve communication, and create a more harmonious home environment.

Whether your family is facing a specific crisis or simply wants to improve overall dynamics, our family counselling sessions can help you achieve greater understanding, connection, and peace within your family.

You do not all have to agree that counselling is a good idea before one of you books it. Starting is usually the part that takes the most out of a family, and everything after the first appointment is easier than making it.
