Anxiety counselling for teenagers in Port Moody

At 220 Brew Street, or online anywhere in British Columbia.

Teenage anxiety rarely announces itself. More often it arrives as a stomach ache on school mornings, a bedroom door that stays shut, homework that never quite gets handed in, or a temper that seems out of proportion to whatever just happened. Parents often arrive saying they are not sure whether this is anxiety or just being fifteen.

Both can be true at once. Adolescence is genuinely hard, and it is also when a great many anxiety difficulties first appear. Counselling is not about deciding which one it is before you are allowed to get help.

Sessions are 50 or 80 minutes at 220 Brew Street in Port Moody, or online anywhere in British Columbia. Come up to the third floor and check in at reception. Evenings Monday to Friday, and weekends Saturday and Sunday, so this does not have to come out of school hours. The first 20-minute consultation is free.

What parents usually notice first

Most parents do not come in because their teenager asked them to. They come because something has changed and the usual approaches have stopped working. Sleep has gone. School has become a fight. A sociable child has quietly stopped going out. Or the panic attacks have started and nobody in the house knows what to do with them.

Anxiety in teenagers often looks like something else first. Irritability and anger are common and are frequently mistaken for attitude. So is avoidance - of school, of tests, of eating in front of people, of answering the phone. Physical symptoms are very common at this age: headaches, nausea, a racing heart with no medical cause behind it.

You do not need a diagnosis, a referral, or your teenager's enthusiastic agreement before booking a first conversation. A teenager who says they do not want to come is not a dead end, and it is a normal place to start.

Your teen is the client

The sessions belong to them. What is shared with you, and what is not, is agreed at the start with everyone in the room rather than decided afterwards.

Parents are not shut out

Many parents have a session of their own to talk through what helps at home and what quietly makes things harder.

Around school, not through it

Evenings Monday to Friday, and Saturday and Sunday, so appointments need not cost your teen a lesson or you a working day.

How confidentiality works with a teenager

This is the question parents ask most often, and it is a fair one. A teenager who thinks everything said in the room will be repeated at home will not say very much, and a parent who is told nothing at all cannot help.

It is agreed out loud, at the start. In the first session your counsellor sets out with both of you what will be shared and what will not, so nobody is guessing later.

The legal limits apply to everyone. Confidentiality has limits that the law places on every counsellor in British Columbia, chiefly where there is a risk of serious harm. Those limits are explained plainly at the start rather than buried in a form.

You will not be left in the dark. Knowing how the work is going, and what helps at home, does not require knowing the contents of every session.
