Couples counselling in Port Moody
Marriage counselling, couples therapy, relationship counselling - the same work under different names.
Most couples do not arrive over one enormous event. They arrive because the same argument has been running for two years and neither of you can remember how it starts any more, or because you are polite to each other and that is somehow worse.
Couples counselling in Port Moody is a room with a third person in it whose job is to slow the conversation down enough that you both hear what is actually being said. Not to decide who is right. A counsellor who takes sides is no use to either of you.
You do not need to be married, and you do not need to be in crisis. Couples come while dating, while engaged, after twenty years, and sometimes while deciding whether to separate. Sessions are 50 or 80 minutes at 220 Brew Street, or online anywhere in British Columbia, with evenings Monday to Friday and weekends Saturday and Sunday.
What couples bring in
Communication that has stopped working. An affair, recent or old. Money. Sex, or the absence of it. In-laws. Parenting differences. One of you wanting children and the other not. A move, a job loss, an illness, a bereavement that landed on you both differently. Resentment that has quietly accumulated with no single event to point at.
Also the ordinary version: you still love each other and you are tired of the way you talk to each other.
Coming on your own
If your partner will not come, you can still be seen. Individual counselling about a relationship is legitimate work, not a consolation prize, and one person changing how they respond often changes what the argument does.
Be aware of one thing: a counsellor who has been hearing one side for months is not well placed to start seeing you both. If you think couples work may follow, say so at the start and your counsellor will tell you whether they should keep the couples seat open or refer that part to a colleague.

What the work actually involves
Both of you talk, and both of you get interrupted: your counsellor will stop the familiar loop before it runs its course. That is uncomfortable for a session or two and then it is the useful part.
Patterns rather than incidents: most couples can recite the last argument in detail. What is harder to see is the shape it takes every time - who pursues, who withdraws, and what each of you is protecting. That shape is what changes.
Homework is small and specific: not a workbook. Usually one thing to try before the next session, chosen by you rather than assigned.
It is not always about staying together: some couples use these sessions to separate with less damage, particularly where there are children. That is a legitimate outcome and your counsellor will not push you either way.
Couple Counselling
Are you struggling to connect with your partner? Do you find yourselves facing a myriad of issues with no clear solutions in sight? You’re not alone, and you’ve come to the right place for support.
Couple therapy is designed to help you and your partner navigate the complexities of your relationship. The most common challenges couples face often stem from frustration with each other’s behaviours. It’s easy to believe that if certain behaviours changed—whether it’s picking up socks, doing the dishes, working less, or communicating more—the problems would be solved. However, behaviour changes alone are often temporary because they don’t address the root cause of the issue.
In our couple therapy sessions, we go beyond surface-level problems to explore the underlying dynamics of your relationship. You and your partner will gain insights into your own and each other’s defence mechanisms and how these patterns contribute to the breakdown in communication and connection.
Our sessions provide a safe space to rebuild trust, improve communication, and foster a deeper understanding of one another. Whether you’re facing ongoing conflict or simply want to strengthen your relationship, our goal is to help you create lasting change and a more fulfilling partnership.
